In Kleist’s The Marquise from O… a single hyphen, the full meaning of which only becomes clear retrospectively, illustrates the principal gap of the story. The author places the conception of a child into the space of this one hyphen. Because the Marquise was unconscious during this physical union, it remains ultimately undecided if the act was one of love or rape. This homage to Kleist’s hyphen visualises the precise ratio of black ink to negative space :
2.23 pages of black to 43.77 pages of nothing.
